Delete files with Cloud Storage on Web

After uploading files to Cloud Storage, you can also delete them.

Delete a File

To delete a file, first create a reference to that file. Then call the delete() method on that reference, which returns a Promise that resolves, or an error if the Promise rejects.

Web modular API

import { getStorage, ref, deleteObject } from "firebase/storage";

const storage = getStorage();

// Create a reference to the file to delete
const desertRef = ref(storage, 'images/desert.jpg');

// Delete the file
deleteObject(desertRef).then(() => {
  // File deleted successfully
}).catch((error) => {
  // Uh-oh, an error occurred!
});

Web namespaced API

// Create a reference to the file to delete
var desertRef = storageRef.child('images/desert.jpg');

// Delete the file
desertRef.delete().then(() => {
  // File deleted successfully
}).catch((error) => {
  // Uh-oh, an error occurred!
});

Handle Errors

There are a number of reasons why errors may occur on file deletes, including the file not existing, or the user not having permission to delete the desired file. More information on errors can be found in the Handle Errors section of the docs.
